But the precise point at which I knew that Walt and I were going to be really good friends for a long time was when he keyed the mic once again to say, in his most fighter-pilot-like voice: “Ah, Center, much thanks, we’re showing closer to nineteen hundred on the money.””

-
This made my LOL, big time.

I just had to post this:

The TSA chose Meg McLain for special screening. They wanted her to go through the new porno-scanners. When she opted out, TSA agents raised an enormous ruckus. When she asked some question about what they planned to do to her, they flipped out. TSA agents yelled at her, handcuffed her to a chair, ripped up her ticket, called in 12 local Miami cops and finally escorted her out of the airport.

So their policy is that you can opt out of the porno scanners, but if you do, you’ll be detained and physically molested. Great.

(Via Daring Fireball)

EDIT: CNN is reporting that pilots are urged to avoid body scanning for health risks.

Pilots’ unions for US Airways and American Airlines are urging their members to avoid full-body scanning at airport security checkpoints, citing health risks and concerns about intrusiveness and security officer behavior.

and CNN continues:

“Based on currently available medical information, USAPA has determined that frequent exposure to TSA-operated scanner devices may subject pilots to significant health risks,” Cleary wrote.

What about us, the passengers? What if I fly frequently?
And:

One pilot described his experience as “sexual molestation,” according to Cleary’s letter. Bates wrote, “There is absolutely no denying that the enhanced pat-down is a demeaning experience.”

Great.

“We are frequently reminded that our enemy is creative and willing to go to great lengths to evade detection. TSA utilizes the latest intelligence to inform the deployment of new technology and procedures in order to stay ahead of evolving threats,” the TSA said in a statement.

Oh, so how do you explain then that the best airport security apparatus, namely the Israelis and El Al, don’t even make you remove your shoes?

hmmmm…..

One thing is to be safe. I am sure the TSA has made a tremendous effort to make our flying experience safer, but another is to do stupid things that really serve no purpose. This is one of them.
